Top things to do in the Algarve

Updated: Jun 7

Are you coming to the Algarve for a holiday and looking to make the best memories here? South Portugal is a fantastic vacation spot all year round. The summer lasts long, and it's hot not only in terms of weather but also in terms of vibes.

It barely rains here, and if it does, the sky is full of rainbows, and nature becomes green and lush through the colder months.

So, if you are considering coming here, you definitely should, no matter the season. But let's get to the point. Here is a list of the top things to do when you're in the Algarve:

Fun activities for everyone

Here is a list of activities that you don't need any particular experience or skills to enjoy here in the Algarve:

1. SUP Tours

In the summer the South coast of Portugal is flat which creates great conditions for ocean discovery on SUP boards. The tall cliffs with sea grottos and caves are great to explore and have fun if you dare jump some rocks! The key is an experienced and cool guide, but no worries, we have a perfect one for you. With Jay at SUP Algarve, you will have the best morning! You don't need any experience and with Jay you can feel safe and confident.

2. Waterparks

If you need a break from the beach and salty water, you can spend a hot summer day in one of the waterparks. Bring your friends or a family and have some fun on slides, have a picnic, and enjoy other attractions. Check our Slide&Splash in Lagoa and Aquashow Park in Quarteira. In the summer months remember to book your ticket in advance.

3. Cultural tours

The Algarve is famous for its culture and is home to many great artists. Explore local galleries and workshops to discover unique, handcrafted pieces. Visit Casa dos Oleiros, where many of the famous tile installations seen in Lagos and Portimão were created. In Barão de São João, you can find a vibrant arts scene. Bring a piece of the Algarve's rich culture and creativity back home with you.

4. Marine life watching

Joining the boat marine watching experience and seeing dolphins, orcas and even whales in their natural habitat is a fantastic experience, much better than going to an oceanarium or any other animal prison. Check out tours offered by Sealife and Wildwatch Algarve for an unforgettable experience.

4. Fishing

The Algarve is a great place for fishing. It's a fun activity for the whole family, and you can get a free dinner as a bonus for a relaxing day by the ocean. We do it sometimes for fun, but we are not fishing specialists at Joyride (yet!) so for more info see this guide When & Where to Go Fishing in the Algarve. For passionates and specialists we recommend joining Big Game Fishing Algarve and Reef fishing trips in the Algarve.

Remember to get your fishing license here!

For sports lovers and thrill seekers

1. Water sports

If you are a fan of water sports, the Algarve has it all. From great waves to windy lagoons, you can discover new passions and progress your skills here. Whether you like to try surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, or wingfoil, join our friends from Algarve Watersport and Jah Shaka for the best guidance and training.

2. WakePark

Wake Park Lagos is the top spot for hanging out and having a good time. No waves and no wind? No problem! Ride the cable on the wakeboard and learn some tricks from the crew there. Make sure to bring your skateboard as there is a mini ramp and your fluffy friend can come too. Follow Wake Park on socials to be up to date with parties, markets, and other cool events they host throughout the summer.

3. Freediving

Explore the underwater world and feel confident diving on a single breath. Freediving isn't just about swimming; it's a way to break mental barriers, overcome fears, and connect deeply with nature. With a good teacher, you will learn everything about safety, and techniques to progress and have maximum joy. We did our AIDA 1 course with Aguas Vivas Apneia and Mario is a great guide with a passion for this sport and a broad knowledge of the ocean. You will find him in Sagres and Villa Nova de Milfontes.

4. Joyride Tours

Our electric enduro tours are a great adventure for people who like to explore new places in an exciting way. You can sightsee the beautiful landscapes and nature and get adrenaline joyriding on light and sustainable dirtbikes. They are easy to use, and anyone 18 years or older with a car or motorbike driving license can join. Book a morning Hidden Hills tour or sunset Golden Cliffs adventure with us and let's make some memories.

At this point, you should have your travel itinerary ready and scheduled for maximum fun. There are plenty of things to do in the Algarve, and whether you are coming to progress your skills or find a new passion, here you can try all of them and see which one is your favorite. Enjoy, you're welcome!
