Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Visit the Algarve: 2025 Fall Travel Guide

Have you been thinking about visiting the Algarve in autumn and wondering if it’s worth it without the summer buzz?

Here’s the deal: if the idea of having a beach almost to yourself, walking straight into the best restaurants without a booking, and exploring the region without the traffic and crowds doesn’t sound exciting… then maybe autumn in the Algarve isn’t for you.

But if you come to unwind, soak up plenty of vitamin D, and enjoy activities without the stress of everything being booked out weeks in advance, then autumn is your season. No pressure, no rush — just sunshine, freedom, and time to explore at your own pace.

In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know to plan your most amazing fall vacation in the Algarve — from weather and packing tips to the best things to do and experience.

Algarve in the Fall: Weather, packing tips, and the vibe of the season

Autumn in the Algarve feels like the region finally takes a deep breath after the busy summer. The pace slows, the crowds thin out, and everything becomes easier to enjoy.

🍷 VIBE

The roads are calmer, there are no endless queues, and you don’t need to book every little thing weeks in advance. Life slows down, and the towns feel more authentic. It’s a season with more freedom, more flexibility, and more space to enjoy the Algarve at your own pace.

Do keep in mind, autumn is also the season when some restaurants and beach bars close for a well-deserved rest after the busy summer months. But don’t worry, plenty of great spots stay open, and the ones that do often feel even more welcoming without the summer rush.

☀️ Weather

The heat of July and August is gone, the days are getting shorter, but the weather stays sunny and warm throughout the day. It’s perfect for beach and outdoor days.

The ocean also changes its mood. Autumn in the Algarve means more waves on the south coast and big swells on the west coast, which makes it a great season for surfers. Just keep in mind that lifeguard season usually ends around late September, so swimming is unsupervised.

💡 Tip: Time Change in October

Don’t forget that Portugal switches from Daylight Saving Time to standard time on the last Sunday of October. This means the clocks go back one hour — you’ll get an extra hour of sleep, but evenings will get darker earlier.

👙 What to pack

  • Bikini and board shorts for sure!

  • Light layers for the day

  • A hoodie, jacket, and long trousers for cooler evenings

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat (yes, you’ll still need them!)

  • Comfortable shoes for walking or hiking

🍃 Mindful & Relaxing Experiences

The beaches and towns that are full in the summer are magical in autumn. There are many beautiful spots along the coast to jog, relax, or meditate. Just go out for a walk and wander around, and you'll find yours. Bring a book, yoga mat, or just your mojo.

💡 Tip: Famous Ponta de Piedade is still the top sunset spot in Lagos, but in the morning, you will meet only a few joggers and dog walkers there.

💡 Tip: Sunrise on the beach is magical. Start your day with a salute to the rising sun with calming waves sound, and it will be the best day ever!

🧘🏻‍♀️ Yoga & Wellness

Many local studios and teachers offer beach yoga sessions for instant relax with warm sunshine and the sound of waves. Join el Sol Yoga for classes in Lagos, Albufeira, and Portimão

Not a beach day? No problem! If the weather turns, the Algarve has plenty of beautiful indoor spaces for yoga, pilates, or gym workouts. You can still enjoy mindful movement and wellness without missing a beat — just pick a cozy studio or wellness center and soak up the calm vibes. Here are a few:

⚡ Adrenaline-Packed Adventures

Enough relaxing — autumn doesn’t turn the Algarve into a zen garden! Cooler temps and fewer crowds actually make it the perfect season for adventure. From surfing bigger waves to exploring trails on an electric dirt bike, there’s plenty to get your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping. Are you an adventure traveller up for a challenge?

Here is your autumn adventure bucket list for 2025:

⚡ Explore the Algarve on Surron Electric Dirtbikes

Join us for an adventure like no other! Whether you're new to motorbikes and off-road or a passionate rider, this adventure is for you. We offer small-group tours for beginners and intermediates on Surron electric dirtbikes, which feel like motocross bikes but are lighter, simpler to control, and more beginner-friendly, thanks to their powerful electric engine, making them suitable for seasoned riders as well.

Tours include 2–3 hours of guided training on a private track and riding around Lagos. The guides will show you hidden trails, cliff paths, and forest tracks while making sure you ride safely and have the most fun possible. It’s a thrilling way to see the Algarve’s landscapes that most tourists never get to experience!

🏄 Surfing & Watersports

More waves on the south coast, bigger swells on the west coast. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced surfer, autumn conditions are excellent. Wind, wing, and kitesurfers will also find some windy days to fly on the ocean or Alvor Lagoon. If you're not advanced in your sport or a first-time here, Algarve Watersport gives classes and guiding on various levels and probably all the watersports. They have great instructors and are open throughout the Autumn for private and group classes.

🤿 Freediving and Spearfishing

Looking for a truly immersive ocean adventure? Freediving and spearfishing in the Algarve give you a chance to explore underwater life up close while testing your skills and focus. Whether you’re a beginner or already confident in the water, this is an unforgettable way to connect with the sea.

Freediving is a very dangerous sport, but there are courses available to teach you the techniques safely. Check out Águas Vivas Apneia for freediving and spearfishing courses on various levels in Sagres and Vila Nova de Milfontes.

💡 Tip: A fishing license is required for spearfishing in Portugal. Make sure you arrange this in advance online.

🐎 Horse Riding by the Ocean

Autumn is the perfect season for horseback riding in the Algarve. Cooler temperatures make long rides more comfortable, and the scenery is breathtaking — think sandy trails, rolling hills, and even rides along the beach at sunset. Check out sunset rides with Carrapateira Extreme.

I know — your autumn Algarve calendar is already looking full! So here's the dessert:
