Frequently asked questions

Got questions before booking? You'll find everything you need to know about our electric dirt bike tours in Lagos below — from what gear to bring, to who can join, to what happens if it rains. Still not sure? Call or WhatsApp us on +351 914 976 892 and we'll sort it out.

📍 Location & Getting There

1. Where exactly are you located?

Joyride Algarve is based at Herdade do Funchal, 8600-310 Lagos, Algarve, Portugal — approximately 5 km north of Lagos town centre. We are not in the town itself; we operate from a rural property with a private track and close access to the coast and the hills. Exact directions and a Google Maps link are sent with your booking confirmation.

2. Is there parking on site?

Yes. There is free parking available directly at our base. You can arrive by car without any issues. If you are coming from Lagos town centre, the drive takes around 10 minutes.

3. Can I get there without a car?

Our base is not easily reachable by public transport. We recommend taking a Bolt from Lagos. If you need help arranging transport, get in touch, and we can arrange something.

🪪 Requirements & Eligibility

4. Do I need a driver's licence to join a tour?

Yes. A valid car or motorcycle driver's licence is required for all tours. Our electric dirt bikes are road-legal, and some routes include short sections on public roads. This requirement applies to all participants regardless of experience level.

5. What is the minimum age to join?

The minimum age is 18 years, in line with the driver's licence requirement to be covered by our insurance during our tours. Drivers with a provisional licence can join with parental consent and their own insurance.

6. Do I need prior riding or motorbike experience?

No experience is needed for the Rookie Tour. The intermediate tours (Hidden Hills and Golden Cliffs) require some experience with two-wheeled vehicles like scooters, enduros, mountain bikes, moto. All tours begin with a training session on our private track, where our guides teach you how to handle the bike before and give you tips to improve your skills before you head out on the trails. Many of our riders have never been on a motorbike before and complete the tour comfortably. For track sessions, if you don't have any experience, you must do the training with a guide before you can ride solo.

7. Are there weight or fitness restrictions?

The weight limit for our bikes is 100kg / 220 lbs, and participants should be in reasonable physical condition. Off-road riding involves physical effort, particularly on longer tours like the West Coast Expedition. If you have any concerns about fitness or mobility, contact us before booking, and we'll advise honestly.

About the tours

8. What tours do you offer, and what do they cost?

We currently offer four main tour types: the Rookie Tour (2 hours, €110) for beginners; the Hidden Hills Tour (3 hours, €140) and Golden Cliffs Tour (3 hours, €140) for intermediate riders; and the West Coast Expedition (approx. 6 hours, €270) for confident riders with off-road experience. Private tours are also available at a custom price for groups.

9. What is included in the tour price?

The price includes the use of a Surron electric dirt bike, all protective gear (helmet, goggles, gloves, knee and elbow pads, chest protection, and a long-sleeved jersey), a training session on our private track, a guided tour with an experienced guide, and civil liability and personal accident insurance for participants.

10. What is the difference between the Hidden Hills and Golden Cliffs tours?

Both are 3-hour intermediate tours at the same price. The Hidden Hills Tour takes you into the hills of Barão de São João, north of Lagos, with forest single tracks and mixed terrain, including uphills and downhills. The Golden Cliffs Tour is more coastal, with single off-road trails along the cliffside and sections of asphalt road, focused on scenery and flow rather than technical terrain. Both include a training session and are suitable for riders without prior off-road experience.

11. How many people are in each group?

We keep group sizes small to ensure a personal experience. Group sizes vary, but we deliberately limit numbers so that each rider gets proper attention from the guide. Contact us for current availability if you are booking as a larger group.

12. Can I book a private tour for just my group?

Yes. Private tours are available for groups of any size — couples, families, friends, stag or hen parties, and corporate teams. A private booking means the track and tour are exclusively for your group, with no other riders joining. Get in touch via WhatsApp or the contact form to discuss options and pricing.

About the Bikes

13. What bikes do you use?

We use Surron electric dirt bikes — specifically the Surron Light Bee (for beginners and lighter riders) and the Surron Ultra Bee (for more experienced riders). Surrons are powerful, quiet, electric off-road machines. They are not e-bikes — they deliver a genuine dirt bike experience with strong acceleration and full off-road capability, while being smooth and beginner-friendly compared to petrol dirt bikes.

14. Why do you use electric bikes instead of petrol dirt bikes?

We chose Surron electric dirt bikes because they allow us to explore the Algarve's natural landscapes with minimal environmental impact. Electric bikes produce zero direct emissions, are significantly quieter than petrol alternatives (reducing disturbance to wildlife), and offer a smooth, controlled riding experience that suits all skill levels. Sustainability is a core part of how Joyride Algarve operates.

15. Are the bikes difficult to ride?

Surrons are easier to learn than petrol motorbikes because they have no clutch, no gears, and instant, smooth power delivery. The Light Bee is lightweight and forgiving, making it an ideal first off-road bike. Our guides match the bike to your experience level and spend time in the training session making sure you feel comfortable before heading out.

16. How far can the bikes go on a single charge?

Range depends on terrain and riding style, but is sufficient for all our standard tours. The West Coast Expedition includes a battery recharge stop along the route. You will not run out of charge on any of our guided tours.

Gear & What to Bring

17. What should I wear?

Wear long trousers, and closed-toe shoes, ideally that cover the ankle. Do not wear sandals, flip-flops, or crocs etc. This is an off-road experience, so expect dust and possibly mud — do not wear anything you would mind getting dirty.

18. What protective gear is provided?

We provide: a full-face helmet, goggles, gloves, knee and elbow pads, a chest protector, and a motocross jersey. All gear is cleaned and maintained regularly. You do not need to bring your own protective equipment unless you prefer to use your own. We do not provide boots and pants.

19. Should I bring anything else?

Bring water, sunscreen, and sunglasses for under the goggles. A small backpack or bum bag is useful for longer tours. For the West Coast Expedition, bring money for lunch as this is not included in the tour price.

Weather & Cancellations

20. What happens if it rains on the day of my tour?

We cancel or reschedule a tour in cases of rain, strong wind, or dangerous weather conditions. If we need to cancel due to weather, we will contact you as early as possible and offer a full rebooking or refund.

21. What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let us know as early as possible. Contact us directly via WhatsApp or email and we will do our best to accommodate you. Full details are provided at the time of booking.

Languages & Accessibility

22. What languages do your guides speak?

Tours are conducted in English by international guides.

23. Is Joyride Algarve suitable for tourists visiting Portugal?

Yes — the majority of our guests are international tourists visiting the Algarve. We are based near Lagos, one of the most popular tourist destinations in southern Portugal, and our tours are designed to offer a unique, off-the-beaten-track experience of the Algarve's countryside and coastline. No local knowledge or riding background is needed.

Gift Cards & Special Occasions

24. Do you offer gift cards?

Yes. Joyride Algarve gift cards are available for purchase on our website and make an excellent present for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and other special occasions. The recipient can redeem the voucher to book any available tour at a time that suits them.

Can I organize a tour for a corporate event or team activity?

Yes. We offer private bookings for corporate groups and team events. A private session at our track or a guided private tour can be organized for teams of various sizes. Get in touch to discuss your requirements and we will put together a tailored plan.
